Durga Navratri is not a man made but it is an ancient Hindu festival mentioned in Brahma Vaivarta Purana
पूजिता सुरथेनादौ, दुर्गा दुर्गति - नाशिनी।
मधु-मास-सिताऽष्टम्यां, नवम्यां विधि-पूर्वकम् ।।
It says, Surath worshipped Durga Durgati Nashini on Sukla Paksha Ashtami and Navami in Madhu-Maas (Chaitra / Vasant).
Hindu festivals aren't man made, not customised in recent years but have ancient history behind them, mentioned in Purana and Shastra.
The origin of Devi Durga happened to establish justice and to end negative influence of demons, by killing them. Even today those who worship Her they are protected by Her energy. Durga Kavach (or say Chandi Kavach) mentioned in Durga Saptashati (a dedicated Granth of Her) provides so strong protection that can't be broken. Remembering Her or worshipping Her during bad times helps a lot, Durga Path / Chandi Path is famous for this throughout India.
