Shiva Shravan Somvar Vrat

After Ashadha month comes Shravan, it’s the month of lord Shiva and the Somvar (Monday) that falls in this month has special significance ‘coz Monday is the day of lord Shiva.

For each Monday that falls on Shravan (Sawan), one should worship lord Shiva with Parvati, Ganesh, Kartikeya and Nandi. Observing Vrat (fast) is considered good, in their worship one should offer the things which are dearest to them. And should chant the following Stotra.

कर्पूरगौरम करुणावतारं, संसार सारम भुजगेन्द्र हारम ॥
सदा वसंतं ह्रदयालु वंदे, भवं भवानी च सहितं नामानि ॥

Some Puja Samagri (things to offer) to consider: पुष्प, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, विल्व पत्र, दही, दूध, घी, चन्दन, शहद, चावल (अक्षत), फल, विजया (भांग), जनेऊ, आक, धतूरा, जायफल, ताम्बूल (पान), पुंगीफल (सुपारी), सूखे मेवे, तथा कमलगट्टा.

People may chant mantra like “Om Namah Shivay” and Maha Mrityunjaya mantra. And should also listen story of Solah Somwar Vrat Katha. Lord Shiva is the deity who pleases fast and is supposed to give anything to his devotees whether it is future husband, future wife, money, disease free body, protection even from Yama, or freedom from a curse.

Why Two Types Of Navratri Are More Popular

Navratri comes four times in a year: 1) In Chitra (Vasant) Maas, 2) In Sharad (Ashwin) Maas, 3) In Ashadha (आषाढ़) Maas, and 4) in Magh Maas. As it is written in the following Shaloka: चैत्रे आश्विने तथाषाढे, माघे कार्यों महोत्सवः। नव रात्रे महाराज! पूजा कार्या विशेषतः ।। Generally, we are told that two Navratri are for public and rest two Navratri are called Gupt Navratri. These two Gupt Navratri are for the Sadhak --- but it isn't the exact fact. All four Navratri are for general public and for all dedicated Devi Sadhak, there is no secret. Fact is during the time of Chaitra and Sharad, weather changes a lot -- so there are chances of getting diseases. During Navratri due to fasting and purification, all kind of diseases can be avoided, that's why these two Navratri gained significance among public.
