Publicly this festival is celebrated two times a year for nine days: first starts from, next day of Chaitra Maas Amavasya; and second starts from, next day of Kwar Maas Amavasya. Gupt Navratri, that is secret Navratri also celebrated two times a year; in total there are four Navratris. They are important to Vaishnava, Shaiv and Shakt — as without the Goddess nothing really happens.
Ancient Vrat Katha
In war between Rakshasas and Devatas, each time Rakshasas won ‘coz they were led by Shumbh and Nishubh, most mightful Rakshasas. At last, when Devatas didn’t see any way out, they ran to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — collectively each contribute part of their Tapa (spiritual energy) at particular point, and thus Devi Durga manifested.
Now she was empty handed so lord Shiva gave their Trident, Vishnu gave their Sudarshan Chakra, Indra gave their Vajra, like this, each one gave their Astra and Shastra to Devi Durga; and inspired her to kill Rakshasas.
Devi Durga fought for nine days and killed the most mightful Rakshasas, Shumbh, Nishumbh, Raktbeej, Dhoomketu and others. And in nine days, while killing them she came in nine forms; Jayanti, ManglaKali, Bhdrakali, Kapalini, Durga (first one), Kshama, Shiva, Dhatri Swaha, and Sudha.
There is another story related to Kwar Navratri that tells war between Ram and Ravana went for nine days; that’s why at 10th day they celebrate Vijayadashami.
Vrat and Puja Vidhi
It starts by Kalash Sthapana, then making nine symbols for nine Goddesses (if you get nine yantras, one for each then don’t make symbols), or you can buy framed photo of nine Goddesses from the market. After it, Sthapana of Ganeshji, Navagrahas and Shodas-Matrakaye (षोडश मातृका). And Avvahan and Pran-Pratishta for each Sthapana.
And now perform Vrat and Puja for eight-nine days by chanting Durga Saptashati and daily havan. At eight or ninth day, feed small children (mostly girls as a representation of Goddesses) and break your Vrat (fasting). Some people do fasting for all eight-nine days and some do for alternate days — it’s all depend upon one’s health capacity.
