My first visiting experience of Varanasi wasn’t good, apart from crowd and narrow streets that usually happens in old cities of India, I couldn’t digest food. After coming from there it took me 7-10 days to recover.
If you are planning to stay there for few days, take a hotel that is (bit) away from any popular place, then it might be cheaper. Try to get any nearby police station number; and number of popular Indian media (Aajtek, Zeenews, BBC India, etc.,) — you can dial for safety when no one hears. Carry some electric kettle to make tea / coffee as per your own taste; you may also boil rice in it and can do other experiments with it.
Temples
When I visited Varanasi, I visited Kashi Vishwanath temple first, there was two long queues, I bought some flowers and went in line and did worship as others were doing.
Next I visited was Goddess Durga temple and it had many other small cubicle temples around it, behind this main temple, you might find a person with amulet kind of black-chords, (it isn’t for charging your smartphone but it is for safety), he gives them on demand, just give him few Indian coins or rupees in return.
I loved Sankat Mochan temple of lord Hanuman Ji. It was built in a big space, though crowdy but was comfortable. You can buy prasad inside the temple (that is usually Peda, an Indian sweet). There are lots of guards of Hanuman Ji in the form of monkeys, just don’t disturb them — and as a precaution, keep your mobiles, cameras, and small carry bags in hiding.
I also visited Kal-Bhairav temple; don’t forget to visit him, he is another form of Shiva and immensely powerful like him.
Ghats
Manikarnika Ghat is a historical ghat, it is also called Maha-Shamshana (which never stops). Sit at this Ghat for hours if you want dispassion from this world (or if your girlfriend or boyfriend has left you, and you want to forget his / her memory). Sitting on Maha-Shamshana gives immense detachment from this decaying world — that’s why it is favorite place of some people.
There are too many temples adjoining to Ghat, my memory doesn’t work to remember everything. Find a booklet if you can get from some book-store, then everything will come handy for you. Visit the things just in day time, return your place by the evening — this attitude is always a good choice at unfamiliar place.
Experience of Boat in Ganga
At the time when I hired a small boat and passed one hour with it — all I can say, Ganga was dirty, it was black with bad odor, overall it wasn’t worth drinking. Sometime cunning boatman play a game, they say, boat is shaking give some money to the boat or to the Ganga else it will drown.
At the time of evening Aarti, lots of small and big boats get together and people in them witness sounds of bells, drums, and melodic sound of Aarti — this is perfect timing for photographers.
Legends linked to Varanasi
People visit the place of legends when they are inspired by them in one way or the other. I would prefer place to visit like of Tailang Swami, Keenaram Aghori and Karpatri Ji Maharaj. There are others as well like Tulsidas, Kabirdas, Ravidas, Satuva (or perhaps Satuwa) Baba and many others.
In the End
If you are a researcher kind of person, you should have more than enough time at these kind of places, ‘coz there are many things in public and in private (I hope so) and it take time to get them revealed.
