There are many paths, each path have different gurus and each guru has different belief systems. But there are few things, which are important to these different paths, or say without them it is hard to rise high for getting a number of Siddhis.
These things are as —
#) Agni for Veda.
#) Yantra for the people who believe in Agam Tantra (where Shiva speaks and Parvati listens).
#) Murit for who believe in Puranas.
#) Cremation fire (चिता की अग्नि) for Tantrik Sadhana Siddhi. It is said in Cremation ground (syn: शमशान, Shamshan) Shiva Shakti live, and this place for Tantriks is as pure as temple.
But it is not essential that only Tantriks go to Shamshan (syn: cremation ground); Gautam Buddha used to send his new disciples to Shamshan for watching burning funeral pyre for couple of months — it was not to get any Siddhi but it was for getting detachment from this decaying world, that is transient. After Buddha, many Buddhists just started living in Shamshan and thus evolved Buddhist Tantra.
There are many things related to Shamshan, like Shamshan Jaagran, Shav-Sadhana and Mantra Chanting. Shamshan Jagran is for awakening dead spirits (for example, Bhoot, Pret, Masan, Brahm Rakshas, etc), and Shav Sadhana is for a deity; though the purpose of both is to attain some kind of siddhi. Mantra Chanting is also for smaller or bigger Siddhis, like of Bhoot, Peeshach, Vetal, Mahavidyas (Kali, Tara, Dhoomavati, Baglamukhi, Chinnamasta etc).
As there is all kinds of people in this world, it is said there are all kinds of spirits in Shamshan — and for protection there are some mantras. People who live in Shamshan for Sadhana purpose, they are expert in certain mantras to protect themselves.
