An image has two important factors: 1) quality of colors in it, 2) and how it looks like in different displays or resolutions, for example, pc, tab and smartphones.
Knowing factors which are responsible for an image, helps in delivering specific image type for specific purpose.
Here are few things about images, I think everyone should know.
- Image files heavy in their size, are often uncompressed, they contain data and you can edit every bit and pieces of it.
- Compressed images are lighter in size, and you can't edit them.
- Raster or say bitmap images are pixel based, if you turn 50 x 50 to some larger size, for example, 100 x 100 — they loose color, 'coz empty pixels come to fill the gap.
- If you turn an vector image from 50 x 50 to even much larger size, say 500 x 500, it won't loose any color 'coz it's path based.
- .psd file: it is a Photoshop file, uncompressed and editable version. If you wish to re-edit your work don't forget to save it with .psd.
- .tiff / tif file: Tagged Image File Format, I've seen this format with "fonts" a lot.
- .jpg / .jpeg: Joint Photographic Experts Group.
- .gif: Graphics Interchange Format.
- .png: Portable Network Graphics.
- Web is filled with .jpg, .gif, .png formats; my choice in 'em goes with .gif and .png, 'coz with .gif you can animate and with .png you can re-edit; I loved Fireworks for both of them.
- .svg: Scalable Vector Graphics, I love this format, 'coz it looks good everywhere, in any resolution.
- .raw: this format is mostly used in Digital Cameras, as raw is raw, without much beautification, it helps Cameras work faster. And you can always use Photoshop Camera Raw to import and edit images.
- Other formats are — .bmp, .pcx, .pxr, .iff, .hdr and many others.
