This festival falls on Kartik Vadi Teras. It comes before Diwali, and it is a great festival for money and health point of view.
For health, this day lord Dhanvantri (god of health, medicine & surgery; or say god of ayurveda) appeared from Samudra Manthan, having a pot of nectar in his hand. For money, goddess Lakshmi is worshiped so she could stay in home forever.
This day at Dhanteras, people often buy Bartan (syn: बर्तन; cooking items); and don’t lend money to anyone, ‘coz money represents Lakshmi — this day they want her to stay with them.
Dhanteras Vrat Katha
Due to lord Vishnu curse goddess Lakshmi had to live for 12 years as a Sevika (syn: servant) in a farmer’s home. After 12 years when Lakshmi wanted to go. Farmer didn’t allow her to go, ‘coz he had known she was not a Sevika but goddess Lakshmi herself.
At last, goddess Lakshmi told him that if he worshiped her at Dhanteras on Kartik Vadi Teras then she would live in her home. By telling the secret, goddess disappeared. Now farmer started worshiping goddess every year — and got all the prosperity in life he ever wanted.
Apart from Lakshmi, this day, people should worship Dhanvantri as he is a god of health. As money is needed in life, health is also needed.
