All kinds of Ashtami throughout the year belong to the Goddess (Durga, Kali, Dus Mahavidyas, or any other Devi) whether they fall in Krishna Paksha or Sukla Paksha.
The Ashtami that falls on Kwar Sudi, has special significance,
All kinds of Ashtami are dearest to the people who do Shakti Sadhana. There is also a secret which people generally don’t tell: people who worship goddess over a long period, they know many thing about Tantric Shatkarma related (‘coz in Hindu Tantra all things happen just by the power of the goddess).
Paap-Nashini Katha Of Durga Ashtami
It is said all the goddesses are just one Shakti that appear in different form for different purpose. As far as Durga Ashtami and Navratri are concerned, there are nine(9) popular rupa (avatars) of goddess Durga: 1) Devi Maha-Kali, 2) Devi Maha-Lakshmi, 3) Devi Chamunda or Maha-Saraswati, 4) Devi Yogmaya, 5) Devi Raktadantika, 6) Devi Shakambhari, 7) Devi Durga, 8) Devi Bhramari, and 9) Devi Chandika.
1) Devi Maha-Kali:
या देवी सर्व भूतेषु प्रेरणा रूपेण संस्थिता ॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥
प्रेरणा means inspiration. Goddess Mahamaya inspired Madhu and Kaitabha, the devils, to be felt like gods. And in arrogance they gave a boon to lord Vishnu (की असुरो का नाश हो), as a result they were killed by lord Vishnu. Since that time Mahamaya were known as Maha-Kali. (Though there is another story too, related to Maha-Kali that we will discuss later on.)
2) Devi Maha-Lakshmi: This avatar of goddess killed Mahishasur.
3) Devi Chamunda Or Devi Maha-Saraswati: This avatar of goddess killed Dhumraksh, Raktbeej, and Chand & Mund.
4) Devi Yogmaya: This avatar of goddess helped lord Krishna in killing Kansa and other devils.
5) Devi Raktdantika: “Rakt” means blood. This avatar of goddess Durga, not only killed the devils but drank their blood too.
6) Devi Shakambhari: This avatar of goddess came to balance environment: vegetables (crops), trees, rivers, rain and other natural things.
7) Devi Durga: She is shakti herself, it is said other avatars came out of her.
8) Devi Bhramari: This avatar killed the Rakshas Arun.
9) Devi Chandika: This avatar of goddess killed Chand and Mund. (Or she killed with Devi Chamunda; there is confusion. So I stopped telling Katha in detail. I haven’t yet gone through Devi Bhagwat completely, perhaps that’s why this confusion is coming. But later on you may find full Katha of each goddess, just give me some time.)
