Jyeshta Vadi Ekadashi is called Apara Ekadashi, this day lord Trivikram (त्रिविक्रम) is worshiped. For worshiping, one should observe vrat (fast) and offer many things to lord Trivikram, like panchamrit, clothes, dhoop, deep, chandan, naivedya and flowers. Feeding the poor and donating money to them are also considered good.
While observing a vrat and after breaking it — that particular day, one should not take sour and salt foods; only plain, sweet foods and fruits are allowed.
It is said if one does puja and vrat this day then bad karma collected by cutting a Pipal tree (पीपल का पेड़), partially eliminates.
Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Once a Rishi was passing beside a Pipal tree; while passing, a Pret (disembodied spirit) who used to live on Pipal tree stopped his way. Rishi talked to him and knew by his Tapobala that Pret had been a good person but due to a deception his brother had killed him and buried his dead body under the Pipal tree. Knowing the details, Rishi’s heart melted and he thought to set him free from that Pret-Yoni.
Rishi said, “If you do Apara Ekadashi vrat and puja on Jyeshta Vadi Ekadashi, then you will be free from this Pret-Yoni.” Pret said, “I can’t do this vrat in this Yoni.” It is harder for disembodied soul to work for their upliftment, so Rishi said, “Don’t worry, I will do that for you.” And Rishi did that. He got released from that Pret-Yoni and went for higher planes.
This vrat is also good if one does for their Pitras (पितृ), sometimes Pitras don’t get mukti and they start harassing (Pitra Dosh) their own live family members unnecessarily.
