डूबते व्रज को राख लियो प्रभु ॥
गोवर्धन धनुधारी, जय जय कृष्ण मुरारी ॥
This festival falls after Diwali, where lord Krishna, Cows, Calves and Govardhan Pahad (syn: पहाड़; hill) are worshiped. And Annakut is distributed among people.
What is Annakut ?
Annakut is made on Govardhan puja this is “veg” receipe. For it, people often come together in a temple or Goshala (गौशाला), and each contribute different kind of vegetables, curd (for कढ़ी) , rice, bajra (बाजरा) and other ingredients. When they are cooked, after putting it for bhoga to lord Krishna, it is distributed among devotees.
Importance of Govardhan hill parikrama
At Govardhan hill, the presence of lord Krishna is considered. It is also blessed by Indra. People often go there to do a parikrama, some go every month and some go every year. Same Govardhan, people make (ritualistic) in their home (after Diwali), do Govardhan puja and parikrama by saying “जय गोवर्धन बाबा की”.
Govardhan Vrat Katha
It is a katha of supremacy between lord Krishna and lord Indra, of course lord Krishna is superior. But Indra didn’t knew this, when people didn't worship him by offering him Annakut (but with it, they worshiped Govardhan hill instead) — he got angry and started creating troubles for them. At this, lord Krishna saved them from Indra’s troubles by lifting Govardhan hill. When Indra recognized lord Krishna is none but lord Vishnu himself everything cooled down. People cheered and celebrated the event.
