Aja or Prabhodhan Ekadashi Vrat Katha
This story belongs to Raja Harishchandra, he used to respect Gautam Rishi a lot — and Gautam Rishi installed a attitude in him, it was to be courageous on the path of Dharma (truth), and to do Vrat and Puja on Prabodhan (Aja) Ekadashi. This whole story is about Raja Harishchandra Pariksha (test) by Rishi Vishwamitra.
Katha is like that, once Indra asked Vishwamitra to test Raja Harishchandra if he was true for his words and actions. Vishwamitra agreed, and created an illusion in Harishchandra dream that he had gifted all his kingdom to Vishwamitra. When next day Vishwamitra appeared in his court and reminded him about his dream — Harishchandra happily handed over all of his kingdom to Vishwamitra, along with his wife Shaivya (later on Shaivya worked a laborer ). Now Harishchandra left eveything, and started doing a job in a cremation ground; his work was to take kafan (कफ़न) as a cremation fee.
Even Harishchandra was working in the cremation ground, everyday he saw dead people burned to ashes — yet he did Vrat and Puja for Aja Ekadashi. He, his wife and son suffered poverty and sickness in many ways which they never hoped for. Once Harishchandra son, Rohitashwa died, poor Shaivya brought him to cremation ground — Harishchandra was on duty, so he asked his wife about cremation fee. Poor Shaivya had nothing to give but she was wearing a Sari (साडी), so she tore half of the Sari and gave it as a fee to Harishchandra. It was painful moment, भगवान भी विचलित हो गये, भगवान से रहा नहीं गया और तुरंत प्रकट हो गये। Immediately Harishchandra son, Rohitashwa came back to life; and Vishwamitra returned his kingdom back to him.
It was Impact of Prabodhan (Aja) Ekadashi on Harishchandra, that made him so strong that he won in every circumstance and never left the path of Dharma (truth). Since that time this Ekadashi is celebrated.
